EM 11g: Opatch Fails on OMS or Agent Oracle Home with Error: OracleHomeInventory gets null oracleHomeInfo (Doc ID 1400906.1)

The Opatch commands on the 11g OMS or Management Agent Oracle Homes fail with the following error:

Central Inventory : /oracle/app/oraInventory
from : /oracle/OMS/Middleware/oms11g/oraInst.loc
OPatch version :
OUI version :
Log file location : /oracle/OMS/Middleware/oms11g/cfgtoollogs/opatch/opatch2012-01-11_17-20-05PM_1.log

OPatch detects the Middleware Home as "/oracle/OMS/Middleware"

List of Homes on this system:

Home name= OraDb11g_home1, Location= "/u01/app/oracle/product/"
Home name= agent11g1, Location= "/oracle/OMS/Middleware/agent11g"
Inventory load failed... OPatch cannot load inventory for the given Oracle Home.
Possible causes are:
Oracle Home dir. path does not exist in Central Inventory
Oracle Home is a symbolic link
Oracle Home inventory is corrupted
LsInventorySession failed: OracleHomeInventory gets null oracleHomeInfo

OPatch failed with error code 73
