EPM Workspace Login Page Hangs with Message "Authenticating User"

The users have reported log in/log out problems in Workspace when using Internet Explorer 7. The symptoms are:

Sometimes the users have to close every open Internet Explorer window or kill the process iexplore.exe and then the second login usually works.
