In some circumstances the OBIEE 11g Presentation Server System Component (sawsever) may not start up via Enterprise Manager Fusion Middleware Control or via the opmnctl command-line. Additionally, the sawX.log may not be getting generated or there may be no entries in the sawX.log (or nothing significant) indicating a problem; therefore, you may need to start the executable manually to see if any message is logged in the console, check for a core dump (crash) or use further operating system diagnostic tools such as truss, dtrace, strace, etc.
