OBIEE 11g|12c: Nothing Happens or Receive Error: "There was an error processing your download. Please check with your administrator." When Exporting to Excel 2007+ but Export to Excel 2003 Works

In 184.108.40.206.0, when attempting to export an analysis to Excel 2007 nothing happens. The browser works for a few seconds and then stops without an Excel file being generated. In 220.127.116.11.1 the following message is encountered:
Error: "There was an error processing your download. Please check with your administrator."
The export works fine if the analysis has only a few columns and rows and can be exported to a .csv file as well as Excel 2003 without issues.
The following message can be seen in the sawlogX.log:
[OBIPS] [ERROR:16]  [saw.rpc.mis.read] [ecid: ...] [tid: <TID>] RPCServer returned a error: Error while executing ExcelRpcCall.processMessage
