OBIEE 11g: Columns are Merged into One Cell When Exporting to Excel 2007+ (Doc ID 1584051.1)

Symptoms

When exporting an Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) 11.1.1.7.0 report or dashboard to Excel 2007+, two of the report columns are merged into a single cell.

The value for each column should be shown in it's own separate cell, but in the Excel output two adjoining columns are merged into a single cell as shown in the screen shot below:

 

This problem may occur on any standalone OBIEE environment, or OBIEE 11.1.1.7.0 installs on an Oracle Exalytics server.
