MaxL Script Crashes on essmsh.exe, Windows Error: Fault Module Name Msvcr100.dll

Symptoms

Running a MaxL script crashes the essmsh.exe module.    A Windows error box pops up.   Selecting to 'show details' displays the following information:

Problem Event Name:   APPCRASH
Application Name:  essmsh.exe
Fault Module Name:  MSVCR100.dll
(not all listed) 

The behavior is different between Essbase versions.  In 11.1.2.3.002 the script crashes.    In 11.1.2.3.507 the MaxL script will show parse errors as follows:

MAXL> login 'admin' 'password' on 'xxxx';

 OK/INFO - 1051034 - Logging in user [admin@Native Directory].
 OK/INFO - 1241001 - Logged in to Essbase.

MAXL>
   2> alter system load application 'Demo';
      essmsh error: Parse error near

MAXL>
   2> alter application 'Demo' load database 'Basic';
      essmsh error: Parse error near

MAXL>
   2> logout;
      essmsh error: Parse error near

MAXL>
   2> exit;
      essmsh error: Parse error near

MAXL>
   2>
      essmsh error: End of File breaks the statement
