Symptoms

You've run the EPM Configurator utility to configure Hyperion Foundation. On the Configure Common Settings page, you've defined a mail server (host, port and email address). After the configuration is successfully completed, you try to start the Foundation Service (Shared Services) but it never fully launches; the Status remains as "Starting". If you run through the Configurator again and clear out all the SMTP fields, the Foundation Service subsequently starts without incident.
