BIApps Support Weblogic CPU/PSU Patches
Actions
There are two types of Weblogic/WLS patches:
1. WLS - FA BP (bundle patch). There are from patches4FA and not publicly available. OBIA is shipped with these patches.
2. WLS - CPU Critical patch update ( or PSU - patch-set) which are publicly available patches shipped by weblogic at regular intervals
Both patches are mutually exclusive and follow different cycles and contain different fixes so they can not be inter-mixed and matched.
OBIA Customers are on above #1 WLS patch process (what we shipped with Installer) but when newer #2 WLS CPU patches are releases they can create conflict with prior FA patch and since patch series are different, the patch application can fail.
How we can resolve this:
Customer can follow CPU patch cycle but before that they need to get out of FA BP cycle.
So first if a conflict arises(please review conflict example at the end) customers needs to can roll-back #1 WLS FA BP patch (what OBIA shipped) and then apply newer general available #2 WLS CPU patch.
With this new approach in future if as newer CPU/PSU patches are made available customers can straight way apply any newer patch without any conflict since they follow CPU patch cycle and without BIApps intervention.
=> Please note OBIA is not tested with newer CPU patch customer should test the patch before production application generally we don't expect any issue with newer WLS CPU/PSU patches but as a best practice patches should be first applied in pre-prod to ensure functionality before production application.
for example: following conflict was reported by customer when applying CPU patch in a OBIA environment WLS:
[prompt]$ ./bsu.sh -install -patch_download_dir=$MW_HOME/utils/bsu/cache_dir -patchlist=FMJJ -prod_dir=$WL_HOME -verbose
Checking for conflicts......
Conflict(s) detected - resolve conflict condition and execute patch installation again
Conflict condition details follow:
Patch FMJJ is mutually exclusive and cannot coexist with patch(es): T8I3
In this case customer can roll-back WLS FA BP patch (what we shipped) and then apply newer publicly available WLS CPU patch for example remove T813 and then Apply FMJJ please test this in your Dev and Test environments before applying in PROD
Please note during initial BIApps install all the OBIA delivered patches should be applied and once Install and Config is complete BIApps will support WLS CPU/PSU patches per above process.
