OBIEE 12c "Failed to load" error when Idle Connection Timeout occurs

OBIEE reports are connecting to a (Netezza) datasource using (Netezza) ODBC client libraries provided by Netezza. (However, this could occur for any 3rd party ODBC).
We have enabled connection pooling and the datasource has set an Idle connection timeout of 4 hours. If OBIEE is not being used for four hours the connection is severed by Netezza as expected.
When user runs reports after this, BI tries to connect and we are facing ODBC errors. BI keeps retrying three times and throws an error.
Seems BI is not aware of connection termination. Services begin working again only after restarting the OBIEE services.
