Discoverer Plus 10g Fails With Error 'IDL:DCCORBAException:1.0' or Random / Intermittent Disconnects (Doc ID 287161.1)

Symptoms

Launch Discoverer Plus 10g applet, create workbook or navigate in the workbook wizard for some
amount of time. For example: dragging items, create sorts, remove items, format, etc. At some
point the following error would appear on the screen:

Oracle Application Server Discoverer
IDL:DCCORBAException:1.0
[OK]

The Java Console will have the following error: "Connection refused to host"

: DiscoApplet[0]: Error received by GlobalStatusListener.
workerFailed() in SessionUI.java

: exception oracle.discoverer.corba.DCCORBAException
{oracle.discoverer.corba.EDCIConstant mErrorCode=kDataErrorGeneric,java.lang.

The ipm.log trapped the following errors:

04/10/14 15:31:51 [4] [libopmnoc4j] Process Ping Failed: OC4J~OC4J_BI_Forms~default_island~1
(1443758317:15857)
04/10/14 15:32:11 [2] [libopmnoc4j] AJP13: Receiving response code: 500 while configured success
code is: 200
04/10/14 15:32:11 [2] [libopmnoc4j] Ping URL for proc: 1443758317 failed while pinging
url:/reports/rwservlet/pingserver?start=auto

The Apache error_log trapped the following errors:

MOD_OC4J_0033: Failed to receive an ajp13 message from oc4j.
MOD_OC4J_0078: Network connection errors
happened to host: machine.domain.com and port: 3304 while receiving the first response from oc4j.
This request is recoverable.
MOD_OC4J_0015: recv() returns 0. There has
no message available to be received and oc4j has gracefully (orderly) closed the connection. 
MOD_OC4J_0054: Failed to call network routine
to receive an ajp13 message from oc4j.


Also, when navigating to the Discoverer Plus connection page, the following error comes intermittently
