Overview of Essbase 11g Web Services
Essbase SOAP Web Services, in version 11.1.2.4 supported access to and administration of Essbase applications and cubes. Essbase Web Services include the following modules:
- Data source – used to identify and connect with Essbase servers, applications, cubes, and dimensions.
- Administration – used to start, monitor, or stop Essbase Server, applications, and cubes and to perform operations, such as executing MaxL statements.
- Data and metadata query – used to perform data and metadata queries, update data, and retrieve metadata from Essbase servers, applications, and cubes.
Replacement of Web Services Beyond 11g
Essbase 11g is the final version that will support the Essbase Web Services. This feature is replaced by the modern REST API in 19c and 21c. Customers using Web services can leverage the REST APIs starting with version 21c. For more details on the REST API capabilities, refer to the documentation. In addition, customers can also leverage CLI-based clients for additional Administration activities.
REST API replaces the Web Services functionality in the following ways:
- Data source – Users can leverage API to connect to an Essbase instance via the instance connect URL. You can use the Applications, Dimensions, and other Database-related REST endpoints to get the required information.
- Administration – Customers can use CLI or User Session-based REST endpoints for administration activities. Use the Applications REST endpoint to manage Essbase applications and databases. To execute MaxL, customers can use the MaxL client. Details can be found here.
- Data and metadata query – use the Dimensions endpoint for metadata query, Outline Viewer endpoint for metadata stats and member info, Jobs endpoint for executing data loads, MDX, etc.
For more details on the various endpoints for REST API, refer to the 21c documentation.

Migration Tools
Currently, there are no migration tools to directly move applications built using web services to REST API-based applications. Customers can create custom applications based on REST API manually.
