Symptoms

After entering the root password during the installation of the registry host on a Unix system, the error

stcinstd.exe (Error):... unable to install as a service. Unable to open (/etc/inittab) ...

appears. /etc/inittab has 770 permissions and is owned by the root user and the system group. The complete error text is:

Installing the RC files into system directory ...

Starting lightweight install daemon
Wait 5 seconds...

stcinstd.exe (Error): Service: [stcinstd(MySchema)] unable to install as a service. Unable to open (/etc/inittab) Error: open (0x20A00000)
stcinstd.exe (Error): Service: [stcinstd(MySchema)] unable to open [/etc/inittab] for writing - this component will have to be added or ran manually
stcinstd.exe (Error): Service: unable to open /etc/inittab to add [/etc/init.d/_804395388] script for autostart - it must be added or started manually/sunquest/egate/client/bin:/usr/bin:/etc:/usr/sbin:/usr/ucb:/home/egadmin/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/sbin:.
