Customized Search Returns ORA-20000: Oracle Text error DRG-10599: column is not indexed (Doc ID 1112408.1)

Symptoms

When using DATABASE.FULLTEXT search, if the query has "dDocName <contains> `XXX`" in it then the following error is returned:

ORA-20000: Oracle Text error:
DRG-10599: column is not indexed

...where `XXX` is any search string.

Changes

Recently upgraded to 10g from v7. Note that upgrading from 7 to 10g fires a change in search engine from Verity to DATABASE.
