System Crashes With "java.net.SocketException: Too many open files" Error (Doc ID 1194575.1)

Symptoms

The nodes the the cluster crash with the below error in the logs:

<Aug 16, 2010 11:54:32 AM EDT> <Critical> <Server> <BEA-002616> <Failed to listen on channel "Default" on 10..x.x.x:8003, failure count: 3, failing for 3 seconds, java.net.SocketException: Too many open files>
<Aug 16, 2010 11:54:35 AM EDT> <Critical> <Server> <BEA-002616> <Failed to listen on channel "Default" on 10..x.x.x:8003, failure count: 4, failing for 6
