Requirement to Apply 10.1.0.5 Patch Set to 10.1.2.3 Middle-Tier (Non-Database) Homes on Linux (Doc ID 1232573.1)

Last updated on JANUARY 30, 2023

Applies to:

Oracle Fusion Middleware - Version 10.1.2.3.0 to 10.1.2.3.0 [Release AS10gR2]
Linux x86
Linux x86-64

Details

It is required to apply the Oracle Database Server 10g 10.1.0.5 Patch Set to Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2) middle-tier, standalone, and Identity Management homes (all non-database homes) in order to update the Enterprise Manager agent from 10.1.0.4.2 to 10.1.0.5.0.

Background Information:

The 10.1.2.3 Patch Set Readme says that only Infrastructure homes with an Oracle Database Server 10.1.x will need <Patch 4505133> applied. On Linux platforms, it has been found that a required component does not get updated. The Enterprise Manager agent component should be at least 10.1.0.5.0 level.

It has been tested to apply <Patch 4505133> before or after the 10.1.2.3 Patch Set in order to update this component. Note this component may have been properly updated if the 10.1.0.5 or 10.1.2.2 Patch Sets were previously applied. Since the original 10.1.2.3 Patch Set release, the requirement has been revised within
<Note 555681.1>, "Oracle Application Server Patch Set Notes Addendum 10g Release 2 (10.1.2) Patch Set 3 (10.1.2.3.0)".

Since the 10.1.2.3 Patch Set is the terminal patch set release, providing this solution is the only method available in order to ensure systems are at an appropriate level before performing any other patching.

Actions

1. On all non-database Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.3) homes, check what version the oracle.sysman.agent is reporting:

cd $ORACLE_HOME/inventory/
ls -d */*/* |grep oracle.sysman.agent

Example output
drwx------ 3 <USER> <GROUP> 4096 Jun 30 2002 Components21/oracle.sysman.agent/10.1.0.4.2/
drwx------ 3 <USER> <GROUP> 4096 Jun 30 2002 Components21/oracle.sysman.agent.ias/10.0.2.0.1/
drwxr-x--- 3 <USER> <GROUP> 4096 Jul 4 2002 Patches21/oracle.sysman.agent/10.1.0.5.0/  < starting with Patches21
drwxr-x--- 3 <USER> <GROUP> 4096 Jun 10 2008 Patches21/oracle.sysman.agent.ias/10.1.2.3.0/

2. If you see "Patches21/oracle.sysman.agent/10.1.0.5.0/", then the sysman.agent component has been updated to a 10.1.0.5.0 level. Note it may say 10.1.0.5.1, which is also acceptable. If it is at this expected level, you may stop here. If you are applying another patch for this component and version, then you can be confident that it will not be skipped.

Note:
If "Components21/oracle.sysman.agent" does not return in the above query, then this component has not been installed for this home. This may be true for various standalone homes where the AS Control application is not installed. In this case, you may stop here as further patching of this component is not required.

3. If Components21/oracle.sysman.agent is present and the "Patches21/oracle.sysman.agent/10.1.0.5.0/" or "Patches21/oracle.sysman.agent/10.1.0.5.1/"does not exist in the output, then perform the following steps:

  • Rollback any Critical Patch Update for 10.1.2.3 which may have been previously applied.

  • Download and apply Oracle Database Server 10g Patch Set version 10.1.0.5.0, which is <Patch 4505133>. The readme is written for a full Database Server home, but can be applied to any home containing components at a 10.1.0.x.x level.

  • Check the same command from step 1 to confirm the update.

    Important:

    • If a one-off patch for 10.1.0.5 components has been applied (including Critical Patch Updates), it is recommended to uninstall this before applying Patch 4505133.

    • On Linux x86 and Linux x86-64 platform, download <Patch 4505133> choosing the "Linux x86" selection.

    • On Linux x86-64, use 32-bit shell emulation with the "linux32 bash" command before running the installer

    • If the 10.1.0.5 installer fails on pre-requisite checks, use "./runInstaller -ignoreSysPreReqs"

    • Patch 4505133 readme steps are only applicable to Oracle Database Server homes. When applying to an Oracle Application Server 10.1.2 home, the installer will detect what needs to be updated to 10.1.0.5.0 and then perform the update.
