When you use MsDS-PrincipalName, an Active Directory Application Mode (ADAM) attribute formatted as [domain\username], as an attribute to sync users with Interaction Services for Active Directory from an ADAM user repository, it does not work when you attempt to run the authentication source user sync job. You see an error similar to the following in a PTSpy capture that corresponds to the auth source sync job:

CPTSyncAgent::ProcessUsers: Call to retrieve the users on this auth source failed. Please check that the authentication source server is online. *** COM exception was: IDispatch error #19876 (0x80044fa4): [SOAP fault: faultcode='soap:Server' faultstring='??????????????????? \--> GetUsers failed with unexpected error ?????? ????????????? error looping through results: GetUsersInternal Error in GetUsers']
