This note is intended for SQL Developer users and Database Administrators who wish to give developers the ability to use SQL Developer's data dictionary-based functionality without granting the DBA role.

It is common for database administrators to restrict the granting of the DBA role.  However, there are several features in SQL Developer that require user access to the Oracle database's data dictionaries, which is easily provided through the DBA role.  Features requiring data dictionary access include:

  • Running Data Dictionary Reports
  • Browsing objects in the Connections navigator (especially under the Other Users nodes)
  • DBA Navigator (3.0 and higher)
