WLS 8.1 - Secure webservice client over HTTPS throws intermittent NullPointerException (Doc ID 1283575.1)

In Weblogic 8.1 (WLS), when invoking secure webservice client over https, you will notice the below NullPointerException which is thrown intermittently:
