WLS 8.1 - Secure webservice client over HTTPS throws EOFException, IOException due to Write Channel Closed (Doc ID 1283578.1)

Symptoms

In Weblogic 8.1 (WLS), when invoking secure Webservice client over HTTPS, the following EOFException and IOException are thrown:

javax.xml.rpc.JAXRPCException: java.io.EOFException: Received EOF from: https://<HOSTNAME>/sas/MyWebService?WSDL after reading 0 bytes..>
