WLS 8.1 - Secure webservice client over HTTPS throws EOFException, IOException due to Write Channel Closed (Doc ID 1283578.1)

In Weblogic 8.1 (WLS), when invoking secure Webservice client over HTTPS, the following EOFException and IOException are thrown:

<Nov 26, 2010 12:39:03 PM CST> <Info> <WebService> <BEA-220025> <Handler weblogic.webservice.core.handler.ClientHandler threw an exception from its handleResponse method. The exception was:
javax.xml.rpc.JAXRPCException: Received EOF from: https://<HOSTNAME>/sas/MyWebService?WSDL after reading 0 bytes..>
