Server 500 error Logging into Portal that has been rewired to use an external Webtier

Symptoms

After rewiring Portal to use an external Webtier (Web Cache and OHS) instead of the Web Cache and OHS that comes with the Portal install, attempts to login fail after submitting the login credentials.  The browser will give the error message shown here:



 And the URL shown in the browser will be of the format:

                   <protocol>://<hosname>:<port>:/osso_login_success?........


In addition the following error message will be reported in the Webtier OHS log file found in the Instance directory  $INSTANCE_HOME/diagnostics/logs/OHS/<ohs component>    e.g. "ohs1.log"
