Unusual/Strange Characters Appear in Metadata Fields after Checking in Content (Doc ID 1286782.1)

Symptoms

After checking content into the Content Server, if viewing the metadata against that content, strange, unusual, and unintended characters appear as part of that metadata.

For example, a hyphen "-" before check-in may result in an upside-down question mark "�" afterwards.
