'The Content ID Must Be Specified' Uploading New File to a Group Space (Doc ID 1296323.1)

Symptoms

WebCenter version 11.1.1.2.0 (Build 11.1.1.3.0100405.0334.1).
UCM version 11gR1-11.1.1.3.0-idcprod1-100505T121221 (Build:7.3.0.180).

Attempting to upload a new file into a group space returns the following error on the screen:

Unable to upload the document.
An unknown error occurred in the Oracle Content Server.

Error message in the error log:

Oracle Content Server error: Content item '(null)' was not successfully checked in. The content ID must be specified.

Error message in the WLS_Spaces-diagnostic.log:
