In-place Upgrade Still Takes a Backup Even When Environment Variable SUN_APPSVR_NOBACKUP is Set to True in Oracle Glassfish Server

Oracle GlassFish Server - Version 8.2 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

You have encountered this problem when you have set the SUN_APPSVR_NOBACKUP environment variable to "true" to prevent the Application Servers' installer from taking a backup during an in-place upgrade, and the installer is still taking a backup.  That is, when you are running the installer GUI you still see the pop-up window showing the files being backed up, or from a command-line installation, when the installer has been run with the -console option, there is a long pause before this message is displayed:

Installer is trying to delete the backups taken before upgrade. This may take some time. Please wait..

Note: Double check the setting of the environment variable.  The correct name is SUN_APPSVR_NOBACKUP, if you have entered this incorrectly then the default behaviour of taking a backup will still occur.  This option to skip the installer's in-place upgrade backup was only available from 8.2 p9 and 2.1 p4 onwards, and hence in versions prior to those releases setting the environment variable has no effect.
