Page Navigation Always Redirects to Home Tab and Hangs In IE8

Symptoms
Clicking on the Activity Stream tab, any tab access will be redirected back to the Home page. This issue is seen in IE 8 only, it is not seen in Firefox/ Chrome.
The issue is not related to custom templates. It can be reproduced by creating a plain new space and clicking on the Activity Stream tab and then followed by any other tab.
The above behavior is not listed in known issues for IE 8
