How Does OAM Know where to Redirect after Authentication? How Does it Store the Original Url

I need to know how OAM maintains what URL the user was originally attempting to go to when they after they are successfully authenticated. In other words, if the user attempts to go to a protected URL (let's call it http://www.orig.com), OAM will intercept that request and take you to a login page. When you log in successfully, it then points you back to the original url (http://www.orig.com). I need to know if it is possible to access that URL programmatically.
