Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

The goal of this article is to explain a technique that can be used for simplifying GlassFish Server patching in a closed network environment, that is one that has no outgoing connection to the internet.

NOTE: This article details an advanced technique which is not needed to successfully patch a GlassFish Server 3.0 installation from a Closed Repository patch.  For that the existing GlassFish Server Documentation is sufficient.

The technique explained in this article could be useful in systems with large numbers of GlassFish Server 3.0 installations and allows the administrator to incorporate the pkg toolkit packages in with the GlassFish Server patch, allowing the pkg utility to be bootstrapped by the existing installations.

However, the pre-installed tookit could simply be made available via a network filesystem which is a perfectly valid way of accessing its utilities on the GlassFish Server machines.

This technique is not needed with GlassFish Server 3.1.1 as the default install provides a complete pkg installation that does not need to be bootstrapped.
