"Certificate chain path length exceeded" When Invoking HTTPS Webservice

Symptoms
In an Oracle Service Bus (OSB) domain, when trying to contact an HTTPS webservice and after importing the server certificate into the OSB trust store, the following warning shows up in the log file while testing the service:
####<Sep 16, 2011 8:00:42 AM CDT> <Warning> <Security> <BEA-090550> <The certificate chain received from "hostname" -<IPADDRESS> contained a V3 CA certificate which indicated a certificate chain path length in the basic constraints that was exceeded.>
This issue has also been described from Weblogic Server perspective in note 1231141.1
