Cannot Connect To Oracle Database When Only 11G-Version Passwords Are Allowed (Doc ID 1384368.1)

Last updated on NOVEMBER 03, 2016

Applies to:

Oracle Java CAPS - Version 5.1.3 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.
****Checked for relevance on 01-Aug-2013***

Symptoms

After following strict security policies in Oracle 11G, by not allowing version 10G passwords, the Oracle Adapter fails to connect to the database by raising the following exception:

java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied

The Oracle Adapter is able to connect, if the database allows connections with both 10G and 11G version passwords.

Changes

The issue occurs when the database user, in Oracle 11g, is configured to have the new version password only (SHA1 hashed & salted).

The data dictionary views, DBA_USERS and SYS.USER$, can be used to determine the configured version of the password .

For example, for a user which is allowed to connect with both old (10G) and new (11G) version password:

SQL> select password_versions from dba_users where username='SCOTT';

PASSWORD
--------
10G 11G

SQL> select password, spare4 from sys.user$ where name='SCOTT';

PASSWORD
------------------------------
SPARE4
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And for a user which is only allowed to connect with the new version (SPARE4) password:

SQL> select password_versions from dba_users where username='SCOTT';

PASSWORD
--------
11G

SQL> select password, spare4 from sys.user$ where name='SCOTT';

PASSWORD
------------------------------
SPARE4
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
