Top-Level Messages Posted to Activity Stream Message Board can not be Deleted (Doc ID 1413710.1)

Symptoms

Users can enter messages on their Home page in the 'Share something:' box.
The message can also include an attached file or link.
The message is created successfully in all cases, but it is not possible to delete the message unless it has a link attached.
This message is added to the message list.
The red cross 'delete' icon is not available for the message.

There is a similar facility available on the default 'Activity Stream' page in the space.
If the message is created here, the delete (red cross) is always available when hovering over the message in the list of messages.
