This article addresses how to create/change an extract checkpoint by specifying Oracle redo/archived log sequence and rba numbers. The extract is normally created by specifying a begin time such as 'begin now'. Sometimes, it may be needed to create/change the extract with specific redo/archived log sequence number and rba number.

For Example:

1. when source redo logs are in ASM and each redo file size is large (say 16GB), using 'begin <time>' will cause extract to search the redo before getting the starting point. This may take time and the command may be replaced with specifying sequence number.
2. When one RAC node is down for a while, 'begin now' will fail because that down node has not generated the redo of current time yet.
3. When adding/dropping a node to/from a RAC
4. When old archived logs are not available and there was long pending transaction but we are sure the transaction(s) cannot be ignored.

This is for Oracle database only, and may not apply to the integrated extract in version 11.2.
