The concepts here apply to all versions of APEX but this bulletin was built on information specific to APEX 4.0 and above.

Purpose

The purpose of this document is to aid in the understanding and diagnosis of APEX application performance and scalability related issues. Since the APEX application resides in the Oracle Database, it is important to understand what specific areas should be reviewed when there is a performance concern. Users of the APEX application may see poor response, unexplained errors, limited access, no access, etc., while the DB itself may exhibit high CPU utilization or even hang. Real life experience has shown that the majority of APEX performance and scalability related issues are APEX application tuning issues or DB related configuration or tuning issues. Only in rare instances have any bugs been identified with any underlying APEX architectural component.

Note: Please read the "official sizing guide for Oracle Application Express" before continuing with this note.

Scope

The information in the bulletin is intended for both APEX application developers and DBAs.
