WLS Error: BEA-101083: Incorrect MACHINE_NAME was Referenced by Foreign Cluster

Symptoms
Managed server logs presented recurring BEA-101083 errors, indicating a connection failure. After closer inspection, the offending WebLogic Server instances have been contacted by a foreign cluster, which was trying to get in contact with them as if they were part of the cluster. Logs showed the following recurring message structure after the WebLogic Server instance was initiated:
Changes
That machine was used temporarily as part of a foreign cluster. All references were removed, but there was still a machine reference to the machine that was related to the offending WebLogic Server instances.
