Selecting Item from BPM Activity Guide List throws ADF Error (Doc ID 1446928.1)

Symptoms

After creating a BPM process with one or more human tasks and deploying the process to EM and initiating an instance of it, you log into the BPM Workspace application and can see the item in the Activity Guide List view. When selecting the item, an ADF error appears on the screen and the application becomes unusable.
The logs throw a null pointer exception and there is an error about threads.
