What are the elements that should be configured to allow an ADF application to run safely in a HA clustered environment?

This is a non exhaustive list of errors that can be seen when some of these requirements are not met:

Log file shows error ADFC-62008 ADFc: This application is running in a cluster but High Availability mode is not enabled in adf-config.xml.
Upon navigation, a session timeout error is shown: "Because of inactivity, your session has timed out"
