NullPointerException on getOPAQUE when using JDBC 11.2.0.3 with XMLType in a Tomcat Web application (Doc ID 1474739.1)

Symptoms

A Tomcat deployed application using JDBC 11.2.0.3 and XML type gets NullPointerException.
The issue is specific to using JDK 1.6 with JDBC/thin 11.2.0.3.  The issue does not occur with JDBC 11.2.0.2 or 11.2.0.1
