Search Results Include Recently Checked-in Documents that do not Match the Search Criteria

Symptoms
Search results sometimes include items that do not match the search terms. This happens for non-admin users: admin users performing the same search get only the expected results.
The "extra" items seem to be ones that were just checked in around the time of the search. Also, searches that include the extra items seem to come from the search cache. Disabling the search cache makes the issue go away.
