InCache error "Could not read disk store element" (Doc ID 1485823.1)

Symptoms

At startup a message similar to the following is seen:

02:40:45,251 ERROR [STDERR] Jul 19, 2012 2:40:45 AM net.sf.ehcache.store.DiskStore deleteIndexIfCorrupt
WARNING: The index for data file pageByQry.data is out of date, probably due to an unclean shutdown. Deleting index file pageByQry.index

(where pageByQry.data may be substituted by other InCache cache names), and subsequently we may see messages like:

02:45:09,313 ERROR [STDERR] Jul 19, 2012 2:45:09 AM net.sf.ehcache.store.DiskStore get
SEVERE: pageByQryCache: Could not read disk store element for key pagename=A/B/C&c=Document_C&cid=1191360292456&p=1191350929566&rendermode=live&site=&ft_ss=true. Error was invalid stream header
java.io.StreamCorruptedException: invalid stream header
at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readStreamHeader(ObjectInputStream.java:764)
at java.io.ObjectInputStream.<init>(ObjectInputStream.java:277)
