How to make "Pick from tree" in 11g, behave like it did in 7.6 (Doc ID 1508001.1)

In WebCenter Sites 7.6 and earlier if the Parent Select Type was set to "Pick from Tree", there was one single select button for all parent definitions combined.

In WebCenter Sites 11g, if you select "Pick from Tree" as the select type, there will be a separate drop zone for each parent definition. If there are many different parent definitions for an asset, this takes up a lot of space on the asset form.

Is there a way to show the same behaviour as in 7.6?
