Invalid Portal Session on Tablets Caused by Oracle Portal Cleanup Job
(Doc ID 1514086.1)
Last updated on APRIL 08, 2025
Applies to:
Portal - Version 10.1.4.2 to 11.1.1.7.0 [Release 10gR2 to FMW11g]Information in this document applies to any platform.
Goal
The problem we are facing is described in this document on My Oracle Support:
"Active Portal Sessions Are Terminated By The Cleanup Job After Changing The Job With ctxjsub.sql [ID 473673.1]"
Unfortunately this document does not offer any solution.
We have a public website and we have thousands of users very day. The Oracle Portal sessions table gets very full and it is cleaned up every night by the session cleanup job that cleans up all sessions that have been running for 8 hours.
The session cleanup job has a side effect. If the user's browser is still running, his session is removed from the sessions table, but the Oracle Portal cookie in the browser is still present.
If the user tries to continue browsing the next day, a white page is shown with the following error message:
"Error: Invalid Portal Session. An error was encountered while processing your Portal request, because your portal session is no longer valid. You have been logged out and you will automatically be redirected to the OracleAS Portal home page in 30 seconds. Click OracleAS Portal home page to go directly to the OracleAS Portal home page, or if your browser does not automatically redirect you. If you continue to have problems while accessing OracleAS Portal, close all your browser instances and try again."
This error is described here:
Oracle® Application Server Portal Error Messages Guide
10g Release 2 (10.1.4)
B19304-01
7.2.2 Invalid Portal Session Message
The user is forced to close his browser in order to remove the Oracle Portal cookie.
This does not work for users using a Tablet PC as browsers on Tablets do not terminate, but keep running in the background.
According to this note on My Oracle Support, the error text cannot be changed:
