Unexpected Error WCS# in WebCenter Spaces After Changing Identity Store (External LDAP) (Doc ID 1518285.1)

When using an external LDAP with Web Center Suite 11g the following error is displayed when trying to add one or more permissions.

WCS#<TIMESTAMP> : Unexpected error occured while retrieving users / groups who have been granted application role null

The Identity Store in WebLogic Admin Console has been changed to use an external LDAP (OpenDS) and the admin role has been changed.

In Enterprise Manager,  the application roles (WLS_Spaces/webcenter) can be seen, and the #administrator role can be assigned to an external LDAP user. Logging into Webcenter Spaces is also successful however when trying to add one more permissions, another admin role for example the following error is displayed:

WCS#<TIMESTAMP> : Unexpected error occured while retrieving users / groups who have been granted application role null

All users granted access through Enterprise Manager can successfully login, but can't do anything in the Spaces Administration page.
