Indexing Fails When A Document Has Links In It (Doc ID 1531924.1)

Symptoms

The Collection Rebuild and Automatic Indexer cycles are failing to complete.  Investigation shows that it stops when a Word document containing links to other documents is converted to a PDF by the Inbound Refinery (which is on a separate Windows server). The refinery is failing to convert the Word document into a proper PDF, generating a corrupt PDF instead. The indexing process then hangs when it encounters the corrupt PDF.  The corrupt pdf also cannot be opened by something like Adobe Reader.
