Symptoms

A "too many open files" error occurs when using a Non-Blocking IO Muxer. In the server logs, the following error message is noted

As per the documentation at https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/web.1111/e13814/wls_tuning.htm#BABEFDHJ, WebLogic Server provides a non-blocking IO implementation that may provide enhanced performance for some applications. If the Muxer Class attribute is set to weblogic.socket.NIOSocketMuxer or the -Dweblogic.MuxerClass=weblogic.socket.NIOSocketMuxer flag is set, this non-blocking IO is being used.
