"The Session is not Currently Connected to any Directory Service or it has been Disconnected" (Doc ID 1551865.1)

Symptoms

At some point the workspace becomes unusable. There are a number of errors that show "The session is not currently connected to any Directory Service or it has been disconnected.".

Error opening /jsf/view/viewPresentationPortlet.xhtml.
The source of this error is:
