Error: Encountered deferred syntax #{ in template text. If intended as a literal, escape it or set directive deferredSyntaxAllowedAsLiteral (Doc ID 1566500.1)

Last updated on NOVEMBER 19, 2018

Applies to:

Oracle WebCenter Portal - Version 11.1.1.6.0 to 11.1.1.9.180717 [Release 11g]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

One of the pages in a custom WebCenter Portal application is generating an error message when viewed in a browser:

OracleJSP error: oracle.jsp.parse.JspParseException:
/mdssys/site/site/mdssys/oracle/webcenter/portalapp/pagehierarchy/Page638.jspx: Line # 38,
Error: Encountered deferred syntax #{ in template text. If intended as a literal, escape it or set directive deferredSyntaxAllowedAsLiteral

The user said that they created a background image in an element, didn't like it so removed it, and now this error message always appears.

A template is being used, but it cannot be removed, as it is also being used by other pages.
