Spaces Edit With Word (MS Office 2007 Enterprise) does not Work (Doc ID 1575341.1)

Symptoms

Using the standard Document Viewer task flow in WebCenter Spaces, when users try the 'Edit with Word' functionality , IE stops working and needs to be shut down. 

The notes below were followed:
<Note 1479358.1> WebCenter Portal Spaces - Edit with Word/Excel (Office Integration) Configuration Example
<Note 1355867.1> - Edit with Word does not Check out File when Using Web Tier

And these two patches were applied: <Patch 12816961> and <Patch 12816961> .

However,  the problem remains.

Office Enterprise 2007 is being used.
