GlassFish Server 3.1.x Getting bad_certificate Error From SSL Web Service

Symptoms
On GlassFish Server 3.1.2.x when attempting to run a web service client that connects to a remote SSL server
the following error occurs.
The issue can be reproduced at will when ccessing a HTTPS Axis/web service to a remote SSL server even though the GlassFish server which is acting as the SSL client has all the required SSL server certificate loaded into it's trust store.
In this example, the SSL client may be an Axis web service client.
Changes
The same Aixs client code may work in GlassFish 3.0.1 by using the same Java version and keystore/trust store. In fact a standalone Java program of the same client works fine.
