'Too Many Open Files' And Excessive TCP Socket Connections In CLOSE_WAIT State In ODI Agent Load Balanced Configuration

Symptoms
After having set up an Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) mixed Agent load balancing configuration comprising:
- A parent ODI 11g JEE Agent
- Multiple child ODI 11g standalone Agents
when the system has been running correctly for approximately 12 hours, the WebLogic Managed Server hosting the J2EE Agent displays the following message:
Too Many Open Files
in its log file.
Moreover, network administrators detect unexpectedly large number of TCP socket connections in a CLOSE_WAIT state on the host server supporting the J2EE Agent which correspond to connections to processes on the host machines where ODI child Agents are running:
