Spaces Authorization Problems In Cluster- SpacesException: Unable To Get Preference Metadata For Space

Symptoms
Users are unable to log into Spaces intermittently.
Other symptoms are :-
1. When searching for a user within Spaces, a user cannot be found BUT they can be seen as members of a group within Spaces.
2. When attempting to change the roles in a Space, unable to revoke role xxx from identity yyy when trying to remove roles.
Error in log is
oracle.webcenter.spaces.SpacesException: Unable to get preference metadata for space XXXXXX
at oracle.webcenter.spaces.internal.model.xxxx.getPreferenceMetadata(xxxx.java:507)
Architecture is as follows :-
Fresh 11.1.1.7.0 WebCenter Spaces and Portal environment with 2 nodes and one Admin server.
Above that are 2 OHS servers and 2 clustered weblogic nodes running UCM (these are on the same machines as Spaces but do not share the same admin server). UCM has the same LDAP but doesn't have any issues.
Remote OID LDAP, HA with SSL.
OAM configured for SSO.
OAM Identity Asserter (REQUIRED)
OAM Authenticator (SUFFICIENT)
Default Authenticator (SUFFICIENT)
Default Asserter (SUFFCIENT)
