Why is there a Maximum Value of 100 within the IPM Web Inbox, Worklist, And Search Results Configuration?

What is the reason for limiting the maximum number of IPM Web Inbox, Worklist and Search Result settings to be a maximum of 100? When configuring more than 100 as a maximum (any amount > 100), the below message occurs:
This setting is accessed via the Go To menu option -> Preferences option.
What are the impacts for choosing to have 10 returned vs. 50 returned vs. 100 returned? What are the system impacts (i.e. network, memory and performance) caused by increasing the amount returned?
