Process As WebService Encountering "Time limit exceeded" Error When The Process Actually Finished

Making a call to a process as a WebService gets 'stuck', eventually timing out. In the BPM engine logs a message like this is seen:  "Time limit exceeded".  However checking the execution in the engine logs confirms the process actually completed.  So it should have responded back...
